Fix Stuck Print Queue on Windows 11 – Quick Troubleshooting Guide
This guide helps clear a stuck print queue and get your USB-connected printer working again. Follow the steps in order. Most issues resolve in Step 1 or 2. If problems persist, move to the next section.
You’ll need: Admin access on your Windows 11 PC, the printer powered on, and the USB cable connected.
Step 1: Cancel All Documents in the Print Queue
- Click the Start button (Windows logo bottom left).
- Type Printers & scanners and press Enter.
- Click on your printer in the list.
- Click Open print queue (or Open queue).
- If documents are listed, click the three dots (…) at top right (or “Printer” menu).
- Choose Cancel all (or Cancel all documents) and confirm.
- Close the window, then try printing a test page (look for “Print test page” in the printer settings).
If cleared and printing works → Done!
If still stuck → Go to Step 2.
Step 2: Reset the Print Spooler Service & Clear Hidden Files
This stops the printing service, deletes stuck files, and restarts it—fixes most stubborn queues.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Scroll to Print Spooler.
- Right-click it → Stop. Wait until Status shows “Stopped”.
- Open File Explorer (Windows key + E).
- In the address bar, paste:
C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERSand press Enter.
(Click Continue/Yes if permission prompt appears.) - Select all files inside (Ctrl + A), then Delete them.
Important: Do NOT delete the PRINTERS folder itself—just empty the contents.
If a file won’t delete, confirm Print Spooler is stopped. - Back in Services, right-click Print Spooler → Start (or Restart).
- Close Services window.
- Go back to Printers & scanners → open your printer’s queue—it should be empty now.
- Turn off the printer completely, wait 10–30 seconds, turn it back on, and make sure it’s online/ready.
- Try printing a test page to confirm.
If it prints → Great!
If the problem returns right away when printing → Proceed to “If Issue Recurs” below.
If printer won’t print at all (no response, not detected) → Go to “If No Printing At All” below.
If Issue Recurs During Printing (Crashes or Fatal Error)
Sometimes a bad cable causes lockups. Try this:
- Replace the USB cable with a known-good one (different cable if possible).
- Reconnect printer to the same USB port.
- Repeat Step 2 above fully (clear queue again after reconnecting).
- Test print again.
If it works with new cable → Keep using it (old cable likely faulty).
If still fails → Move to next section or contact support with details.
If Printer Won’t Print At All (Not Detected / No Response)
The USB port assignment may have changed, or Windows lost track of it. Check and fix in Device Manager.
- Right-click Start button → select Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and Printers (or look under “Other devices” for unknowns).
- Look for your printer name (or “Unknown device” if not recognized).
- To see which physical USB port it’s using:
– Click View menu → Devices by connection.
– Expand the tree under USB Root Hub / controllers to trace where your printer appears (helps identify if it’s on a different hub/port). - Try plugging into a different USB port on your computer (front/back, USB 2.0 vs 3.0 if available).
- After switching ports:
– Windows may redetect it automatically.
– If not, right-click the printer/device → Uninstall device (if listed), unplug/replug, or restart PC. - Repeat Step 2 (Print Spooler reset) after changing ports.
- Test print.
If Still Not Working: Update / Reinstall Printer Driver
For specific printers (e.g., BCC or thermal mailer models), use the official driver package. Otherwise, visit your printer manufacturer’s website (HP, Brother, Epson, etc.) for Windows 11 drivers.
- Download the latest driver ZIP: BCC Print Drivers v4.8.0.0 (if this matches your model).
- Extract the ZIP file (right-click → Extract All).
- Run PrintDrivers.exe from the extracted folder.
- Follow prompts: Select your printer manufacturer, then exact model.
- Complete installation, restart PC if asked.
- Go to Printers & scanners → Add device if needed, or test print.
If your printer is a different brand, search “[Your Printer Model] driver Windows 11” on the manufacturer’s site and follow their installer.
