Office & Deskside Shredders

An office or deskside shredder destroys sensitive paper and, on some models, CDs, DVDs, and tapes, right where the documents are handled instead of sending them offsite. We stock new Formax shredders in cross-cut and multimedia configurations, sized for individual desksides up to shared office use. Every machine ships nationwide with phone support before and after the sale. Below the machines: our plain-English guide to choosing an office shredder, and answers to the questions we hear most.

How to choose an office shredder

The deciding spec is security level and particle size — how small the shred comes out, and how hard the resulting scrap is to reconstruct. Cross-cut shredders on this page produce smaller, more secure particles than a strip-cut would; for genuinely high-security destruction requirements, see our Industrial & High-Security Shredders category instead.

After security level, match the machine to sheet capacity and duty cycle. Deskside units handle lighter daily volume for one person or a small team; larger OnSite office models step up in sheet-per-pass capacity and feed opening width for shared departmental use. Tell us how many people will use the machine and how often, and we will size it honestly.

If your office also needs to destroy CDs, DVDs, or backup tapes alongside paper, look for the multimedia-rated models in this category rather than a paper-only shredder.

Office shredder questions

What does "cross-cut" mean and why does it matter?
Cross-cut shredders cut paper both horizontally and vertically, producing small confetti-like particles that are far harder to reconstruct than the long strips from a strip-cut shredder. Most office shredders in this category are cross-cut.

What's the difference between a deskside and an OnSite office shredder?
Deskside models are sized for one person's daily volume next to a single desk. OnSite office models have a wider feed opening and higher sheet-per-pass capacity, suited to shared use by a small team or department.

Can these shredders handle CDs, DVDs, or tapes?
Only the models specifically rated for multimedia destruction. Check the individual product listing, or tell us what you need to destroy and we will point you to the right model.

How many sheets can these shredders handle at once?
It varies by model, from around 17 sheets per pass on smaller deskside units up to 35 or more on larger OnSite models. Tell us your typical volume and we'll match you to the right capacity.

Do these shredders need a high security rating?
Not necessarily — office and deskside shredders in this category are built for routine document destruction. If you have a specific security-level requirement, our Industrial & High-Security Shredders category covers NSA-listed and NSA-evaluated models.
