Folders & Inserters

A folder or inserter automates preparing mail: folding sheets to size and, for full inserting systems, reading each document and stuffing the correct pages into the correct envelope. AFM stocks folding and inserting equipment across a range of speeds and capabilities, including new, used, and refurbished machines. Every machine ships nationwide, with phone support to help you pick the right class for your mail volume. Below the machines: our plain-English guide to choosing a folder or inserter, and answers to the questions we hear most.

How to choose a folder or inserter

The first decision is whether you need a folder alone or a full inserter. A folder only creases and folds paper into a mailable size; an inserter also opens envelopes and stuffs them, either with a fixed set of pages for every envelope or, on machines with reading capability, a different, correctly matched set of pages for each recipient.

Once you know which you need, volume and mail complexity drive the rest. Higher daily volumes call for faster feed and fold cycles and sturdier duty cycles; mailings where every envelope's contents differ require an inserter with page-matching capability rather than a simple folder.

Envelope and insert size and stock also matter: count everything that goes into the envelope, including reply pieces, before choosing a model, and ask us to confirm fit if your mailing includes anything besides folded letter paper.

Brands we carry

Our folder and inserter lineup includes Quadient, Neopost, Hasler, and Formax, covering machines from simple folding to full matched-mail inserting.

Folder and inserter questions

What is the difference between a folder and an inserter?
A folder only folds paper to size. An inserter also opens an envelope and stuffs it with the folded pages, and on many models can read a mark on each sheet to match the correct pages to the correct envelope.

Do I need a machine that reads and matches pages?
Only if your mailing sends a different number of pages to different recipients, such as statements or invoices. If every envelope gets identical contents, a simpler folder or fixed-insert machine is enough.

Can these machines handle reply envelopes or cards?
Many models accept reply envelopes and cards through a dedicated insert station or special feeder, but not through the standard fold path. Tell us what your mailing includes and we will confirm the right configuration.

What volume do I need before stepping up from tabletop to production equipment?
There is no fixed number; it depends on your mailing's complexity and your available labor. Call us and we will size a machine honestly to your actual daily and peak volumes.
